GLOBAL HEALTH PROBLEM: OBESITY

Basically, obesity, which is considered as a complex an multifactorial disease which affects the health negatively, is an extreme fat tissue increase in the body. Today, it is the second most important cause of preventable death after smoking. It reduces the quality of life by causing many health problems such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, especially type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, hypertension (HT), hyperlipidemia (HL), cerebrovascular disease, various cancers, obstructive sleep-apnea syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gastroesophageal reflux, biliary tract disease,polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, osteoarthrosis and depression. According to the epidemiologic studies conducted in Turkey, it is stated that one out of every three people is obese.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE OBESITY?

Body mass index (BMI) measurement is the most commonly used evaluation criterion in clinical practice. BMI is calculated by dividing body weight (kg) by the square of height (m2). Another important dimension of is the abdominal liposis,in other words, the increase of fats around your belly. Another measurement method that can be used to evaluate abdominal fat and thus obesity is waist circumference measurement. According to TURDEP data, a waist circumference of more than 102 cm in men and 88 cm in women is defined as obesity criteria.
